Autumn is filled with colour, mystery and awe-inspiring beauty. The little woodland creatures are hard at work preparing for the colder months, and so should you be. No, no…I don’t mean collecting chestnuts or flying south! However, boosting yours and your family’s immune systems at this time of year is so important, and I’d like to share a few natural remedies you could try.
Previously, I wrote a blog about Thieves Oil, an amazing blend of aromatherapy oils that you can burn in the living room, even when you’re entertaining. It may reduce the possibility of cross infection at festive gatherings and has a wonderfully warm aroma, that most people respond to positively. If you’ve been to well4ever recently, you may have noticed we’ve been using this oil at the clinic in the reception area for the last couple of weeks. The blend can also be applied topically, just be cautious with the spice oils.
If herbs and spices are your preferred method of home remedies, try this spring onion and ginger tea.
Ginger has a strong antimicrobial action that can help fight colds and flu. It is beneficial for throat infection and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Spring onion is traditionally used in Chinese medicine for the common cold. They contain essential oils that stimulate the sweat glands and promote sweating
- Slice 3 x 1cm piece of fresh ginger root
- Chop 5 white bulbs off a few spring onions (leaving the roots on if possible)
- Add both ingredients to a pot of 500ml (2-3 glasses) of cold water and soak for 15 minute.
- Bring to a boil
- Simmer down for 5 minutes, let cool and drink
- Add honey if you like it sweet
Benefits of honey are well known. It is a fantastic immune booster as well as an ideal source for energy. Its antiseptic properties inhibit the growth of bacteria, and it’s particularly good for a sore throat.
