Nutritional Deficiencies – so what’s the big deal?
Nutrients are essential to life and good healthand are made up of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, oils, vitamins, minerals and water. The very fact that these mysterious little molecules are ‘essential’ means that they cannot be made in the body (at least not in sufficient amounts) and must therefore be provided in the diet.
If our diet is lacking in nutrients, then over time, a deficiency will occur, thus leading to a myriad of acute and chronic health problems – with the worst case scenario ending in death. Wooah I hear you say, now that sounds a little extreme! Well despite having drama queen tendencies, I am serious – these little gems really are pivotal to life and good health.
Getting to the heart of the matter (or artichoke), nutritional deficiencies have a lot to answer for and in my opinion, are an important contributing reason towards the levels of substandard health in today’s modern world.
For those health conscious ones, it would only be natural to think that through eating a healthy balanced diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, fish, eggs, healthy oils, legumes, lean meat, poultry and plenty of water etc, then you would be getting all the nutrients you would need – right?
Well unfortunately in this day and age, it is no longer this simple and for the benefit of your health and longevity (as well as aging gracefully for those beauty conscious ones). It is worth considering the following common antagonizing factors:
- Dietary – such as bad fats, processed foods, sugar & sweeteners
- Physiological – irregular digestion, food intolerances, allergies & low immunity
- Stress – physical, mental and emotional
- Environmental – pollution, smoking, modern farming methods
