What is Insomnia?

It is a common sleep disorder whereby sufferers either battle to fall asleep or stay asleep. This can leave you feeling muggy-headed, irritable, lacking in energy and even lower your immune system in severe cases.

Insomnia is normally bought on by certain situations such as family pressure, work-related stress or a traumatic experience. Feelings of anxiety or fear can leave one overwhelmed. Thoughts circle in your mind like a merry-go-round; either about a past event that you feel should’ve turned out differently, or a future event that you’re anxious about, such as an interview. This can lead to an emotional or mental overload.

Certain cases of insomnia can be symptoms or side effects of an illness or medication.

What can you do?

Meditate

Even if it’s just 15 minutes, there is no right or wrong way. If your mind is too active, buy a guided meditation CD and free your imagination. I’d like to mention that Reiki is an amazing alternative therapy that is worth looking into if you have tried all other avenues.

Flower essences

These beautiful natural remedies are extremely affordable and can assist you in dealing with a range of emotional or mental issues. Most people are familiar with the Bach Flower Remedies and can be found in most natural health clinic and pharmacies. Australian Bush Flower Remedies pack a punch and can help you resolve issues, just think of the brilliant energy the flowers receive from the Aussie sun! Recently, I tried Wildflower Essences which are created without removing the wild flowers from the earth. A truly harmonious and lovingly created range of essences.

Create your own, or pop into Well4ever to sample my Lullaby Pillow Mist. It contains essential oils and flower essences to soothe the mind and create a sense of peace. Lightly mist your pillow and enjoy the scents as you are lulled to sleep. If you wake up in the night, keep it on your bed side table so you can mist your sleeping space again. Alternatively, you can use the roll on, a blend of essential oils to deepen the breathe and help you drift off to sleep naturally.

Herbal tea

Chamomile, pink rose or rooibos tea make a perfect cuppa to end a long day. Soothing and relaxing, herbal teas are naturally caffeine-free, and help you to wind down. Try avoid caffeine from mid-afternoon if you suffer from insomnia.

Aromatherapy massage

Holistic massage has long been known to enhance relaxation and aid sleep. Recent studies are now confirming the effects that essential oils can have on the mind and body. I am offering a free 15 minute aromatherapy consultation at the Well4ever Clinic in Putney. If you would like to discuss the benefits and look at  other ways that you could include aromatherapy in your daily life, call to book a free consultation on 0208 789 4362.
